Unidentified gunmen have shot dead at least one Coptic Christian priest in the Egyptian city of El-Arish in the troubled Sinai Peninsula, security officials say.

Security sources noted that gunmen killed the religious figure in the coastal city of El-Arish, north of Sinai on Saturday afternoon.

Sources say the motive behind the killing is still not clear. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the killing.

Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt’s 85 million population.

The violence against the minority priest comes a day after gunmen armed with heavy weapons attacked several checkpoints across the restive area, killing at least five security personnel and injuring several others.

In addition, at least 36 people were killed and over 1,100 more wounded in the ongoing political turmoil across the North African country on Friday.
