Russia: Resort to force in Syria will destabilize region

Aug 28, 2013 – Moscow, (SANA-R. Milhem / M. Ismael / H. Sabbagh)
– Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that resorting to force in Syria will lead to destabilize the situation in the region, stressing that there’s no alternative for a political resolution for the crisis in Syria.

Lavrov’s remarks came during a phone call with UN Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on Wednesday that Lavrov and Brahimi discussed the Syrian issue which has become very intense in recent days due to steps and statements made by some countries, and that the two sides agreed on the necessity that all sides, including outside players, act candidly and not repeat past mistakes during this critical juncture.

Earlier on Tuesday, Lavrov expressed during a phone call with US counterpart John Kerry his country’s rejection of US accusations against Syria on chemical weapons use, voicing concern over “the deliberate course of some countries that is aimed at aborting attempts for solving the crisis in Syria through political means.”

Gatilov: using force against Syria flagrant violation of law

For his part, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov affirmed that the use of force against Syria, which is an excess on the role of the UN Security council, is a flagrant violation of the international law.

“Some countries are ready to use force even before announcing the results of the objective investigation of the UN experts,” Gatilov told reporters in The Hague.

He added that it is early to talk about voting at the Security Council regarding a draft resolution on Syria, referring to Russia’s right of using veto.

Russian Duma Chairman: Any military action in Syria will increase tension in whole region

Chairman of Russian State Duma, Sergey Naryshkin, stressed that any military action against Syria will increase tension in the whole region and affect the UN and its institutions badly.

In an interview with Russian 24 Channel Tuesday, Naryshkin  said that the situation is complicated and very tense, expressing conviction that such an act will not bring a solution, but rather it would complicate the situation in the whole region, as it will also affect the UN and its institutions badly.

The Duma Chairman called his fellow foreign parliamentarians to ponder this rigorous situation as to prevent their governments from carrying out impulsive moves.

Pushkov: Britain submitting draft resolution to Security Council a tactical move to justify military intervention against Syria

Chairman of the International Affairs Committee at the Russian State Duma, Alexei Pushkov, said that the draft resolution Britain intends to submit to the Security Council is a tactical move to justify military intervention against Syria.

In a statement, Pushkov said that British Prime Minister David Cameron is fully aware of the end result of submitting this draft resolution, and that they seek by addressing the Security Council to appear as if they’re seeking legitimacy for carrying out military action against Syria and later say that they attempted to present this issue to Security Council when they begin their attack.

He affirmed that, contrary to its statements, Washington’s actions clearly seek to change the “regime” in Syria through military action and by destroying its military capabilities, noting that Cameron today is leveling accusations at Syria exactly like his predecessor Tony Blair did when he claimed at the House of Commons that Iraq possessed weapons capable of destroying London, claims which were later proven to be false.

Communist Party of Russia calls for bolstering Russian military presence in the Mediterranean to prevent aggression on Syria

Russian State Duma 1st Deputy Chairman, Deputy Chairman of the Communist Party of Russia Ivan Melnikov, called for bolstering Russian military presence in the Mediterranean to prevent aggression on Syria, stressing that escalating the Syrian issue constitutes armed aggression against a sovereign country.

Melnikov told journalists that the US and its NATO allies are taking steps to escalate the Syrian issue and increase tensions in an already volatile area, stressing that the Russian leadership must take all possible measures including political and military measures to curb aggressive tendency of the Washington-led NATO and cool “hot heads” in the West.

He said that the impudent steps against Syria are part of a global geopolitical sabotage, and that the Communist Party of Russia supports the Russian leadership’s position on preventing foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs and on resolving the crisis using peaceful and political methods.

  1. Yes, Western mitary attack against Syria will destabilize the Me region further whose behalf the West has been waging war on Syria. This is because the Muslim world of the Me is already on fire. In addition, Mr. Lavrov is well aware that the ME has been deliberately destabilized by the West and the regional allies and thus this is a weak arguent– and this is not the real the point. The real point is that the warmongering classes of the West and their ME allies are open in their use of Al Qaida terrorists and international mercenaries against Syria -and if they are successful in destroying Syria- with additional direct military attack, they will use the same tactic against Iran, and most critically against Russia.
Thus, it is in the best interest of Iran and Russia to prevent imperialistic attack against Syria. It is also the duty of Russia to bring to the UNSC for a serious debate already well documented use of chemical weapons inside Syria by the terrorists but also th endless flow of illegal arms and terrorists to Syria via Turkey and Jordan. Three of the five member UNSC members are funding, training and arming Al Qaida terrorists against Syria. This is the bottom line of the status of the global security today. Only effective resistance can safe Syria-not reasoning with the very nations who are funding and arming Al Qaida terrorists against Syria.
